How Much Does a Tattoo Cost in Charleston SC?

By Paul Zapico | Charleston, SC Tattoo Artist

One of the most common questions I get as a Charleston tattoo artist is “how much will my tattoo cost?” The honest answer is — it depends. Every tattoo is unique, and pricing reflects the time, skill, and detail that goes into creating custom art that will last a lifetime. Here’s a complete breakdown of how tattoo pricing works at my private studio in Charleston SC.

Minimum Tattoo Price — $100

Every tattoo at my studio starts at a $100 minimum regardless of size. This covers the cost of professional grade supplies, single use sterile equipment, setup, and the artist’s time. Even the smallest, simplest piece requires the same level of preparation and sanitation as a large custom tattoo. If you’re looking for a small meaningful piece, a minimalist fine line tattoo, or a simple design, the $100 minimum is your starting point.

Single Session Tattoos — Pricing Depends on Several Factors

For tattoos completed in one sitting, pricing is not charged by the hour. Instead the cost is determined by a combination of factors unique to your tattoo:

Size — A small wrist tattoo and a large back piece require completely different amounts of time, ink, and detail work. Larger tattoos naturally cost more.

Design Complexity — A simple minimalist fine line tattoo requires different skill and time than a highly detailed realism portrait or an intricate Japanese sleeve panel. The more complex the design, the higher the investment.

Style — Certain tattoo styles are more labor intensive than others. Black and grey realism, fine line, and detailed color work require more precision and time than bold traditional tattoos.

Placement on the Body — Where your tattoo goes affects pricing. Certain areas of the body are more difficult to tattoo due to skin texture, curvature, or sensitivity — including ribs, hands, feet, and necks. These placements require extra skill and time.

Level of Detail — Highly detailed custom artwork, portraits, and large scale illustrative pieces involve significant design time before the needle even touches skin. Custom design work is reflected in the final price.

The best way to get an accurate quote for your single session tattoo is to contact Paul directly with your idea, reference images, size, and placement. Every quote is free and there’s no obligation.

Multi Session Tattoos — $150 Per Hour

For larger projects that require more than one session — full sleeves, back pieces, large chest pieces, and detailed large scale custom work — pricing is charged at $150 per hour with discounted rates available for:

• Large scale projects

• Full sleeves and back pieces

• Work Paul is particularly passionate about and interested in taking on

• Long term clients building out a collection

Multi session projects are quoted upfront so you always know what to expect before committing. Paul works closely with every client to design a project plan that fits both your vision and your budget. Larger projects are broken into manageable sessions so you’re never overwhelmed by the cost all at once.

If you have a large scale tattoo project in mind — whether it’s a Japanese full sleeve, a black and grey realism back piece, or a full color custom chest piece — reach out for a personalized consultation and quote.

Is It Worth It?

A tattoo is permanent. It lives on your body every single day for the rest of your life. Choosing a skilled, experienced artist who specializes in the style you want is always worth the investment. Cheap tattoos rarely stay looking good long term — and fixing or covering up a poorly done tattoo always costs more than doing it right the first time.

At my private Charleston studio, every tattoo is custom designed specifically for you. No flash off the wall, no rushing, no walk-ins. Just clean, precise, professional custom tattooing in a private comfortable environment.

Blooming with Beauty: A Japanese Peony Cover-up Tattoo Story

Blooming with Beauty: A Japanese Peony Cover-up Tattoo Story

As a tattoo artist in Charleston, South Carolina, I recently had the opportunity to create a Japanese-inspired peony tattoo to cover up an old heart and wings tattoo on my client's hip. The peony, with its delicate pink and purple petals and bold green leaves, is a popular choice in traditional Japanese tattooing and provided the perfect solution to cover up the old tattoo. By using darker colors and more detailed leaves, I was able to seamlessly blend the new tattoo with the existing one, creating a beautiful and meaningful piece of art.

Tattoo Aftercare Guide: How to Take Care of Your New Tattoo

Tattoo Aftercare Guide: How to Take Care of Your New Tattoo

By Paul Zapico | Charleston, SC Tattoo Artist

Getting a tattoo is an investment in your body and your art. How you care for it in the first few weeks determines how vibrant and sharp it looks for years to come. Here’s everything you need to know straight from a professional Charleston tattoo artist. You can also visit the Aftercare section for more info.

The First 24 Hours

Your tattoo is an open wound and needs to be treated like one. Keep it covered, clean, and away from direct sunlight. Avoid touching it with unwashed hands and stay out of pools, oceans, and bathtubs until it’s fully healed.

Basic Tattoo Aftercare Steps

1. Remove the initial wrap after 2-3 hours unless you were given Saniderm (see below)

2. Gently wash with lukewarm water and unscented antibacterial soap — we recommend Dial Unscented Soap

3. Pat dry with a clean paper towel — never rub

4. Apply a thin layer of unscented lotion or tattoo aftercare balm — we recommend Lubriderm Unscented or Aquaphor

5. Repeat washing and moisturizing 2-3 times daily for 2 weeks

6. Never pick or scratch peeling skin — let it fall off naturally

7. Stay out of direct sunlight — once healed always apply SPF 50 sunscreen over your tattoo

What to Avoid

• Soaking in water (pools, oceans, baths) for at least 3 weeks

• Direct sunlight and tanning beds

• Tight clothing rubbing over the tattoo

• Picking, scratching, or peeling

• Petroleum-based products like Vaseline

How to Use Second Skin / Saniderm

Saniderm is a transparent adhesive bandage that protects your fresh tattoo and speeds up healing dramatically. Many tattoo artists including Paul Zapico use it because it keeps the tattoo moist, clean, and protected without daily wrapping.

You can purchase Saniderm here: Saniderm on Amazon

Step by Step Saniderm Instructions:

https://faq.saniderm.com/knowledge-base/how-does-saniderm-work/

1. Leave the first piece on for 24 hours — your artist will apply this in the studio. You may see ink, blood, and plasma pooling under it — this is completely normal

2. Remove after 24 hours — peel back slowly under warm running water to avoid irritation

3. Wash gently with unscented soap and pat dry with a paper towel

4. Apply a second piece of Saniderm for an additional 3-5 days — make sure skin is completely dry before applying or it won’t stick

5. Remove the second piece after 3-5 days by peeling slowly in the direction of hair growth under warm water

6. Moisturize daily after removal with unscented lotion until fully healed

Saniderm Tips:

• If the bandage lifts or leaks before 24 hours, remove it and wash normally

• Never re-apply Saniderm over an infected or irritated area

• If you experience a rash or allergic reaction remove immediately — some people are sensitive to the adhesive

• After removing Saniderm your tattoo may look fully healed but the deeper layers of skin are still healing — keep moisturizing

From Culture to Canvas: Japanese Hannya Mask and Cherry Blossom Tattoo by Paul Zapico

From Culture to Canvas: Japanese Hannya Mask and Cherry Blossom Tattoo by Paul Zapico

Japanese tattoos have a long and rich history, with designs and motifs that are deeply rooted in tradition and cultural symbolism. When it comes to creating a Japanese tattoo, it takes skill, patience, and a deep understanding of the art form to bring a design to life.

Paul Zapico, a tattoo artist based in Charleston, South Carolina, is known for his exceptional skill in Japanese tattooing. Recently, he completed a stunning piece for a client named Dave - a blue Japanese hannya mask with red and pink cherry blossom tattoo that took over ten hours to complete in three sessions. The hannya mask is a traditional Japanese mask representing a jealous female demon, often used in Noh theater.

In Japanese tradition, cherry blossoms also represent the samurai spirit and are often associated with the warrior's acceptance of mortality and willingness to sacrifice oneself for a greater cause. The combination of the hannya mask and cherry blossoms in Dave's tattoo adds depth and complexity to the design, creating a unique and meaningful piece of art. Paul's attention to detail and mastery of the art form truly shines in this mesmerizing tattoo.
